Introduction to PAW TREK and Canine Good Citizen

What is PAW TREK?

PAW = Public Adventure Walking
TREK = def. a journey or trip

And for any Star Trek fans, we will boldly go where you and your dog has not gone before!
  • Have you ever wanted to share more experiences with your dog...but worried about how they would behave in new places with new people?

  • Have you heard about dog friendly events that you thought sounded like fun...but were not confident about how your dog would react once there?

  • Have you ever wished you had more friends who wanted to hang out with you and your dog?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, then PAW TREK is for you!

In Paw Trek Classes, we'll visit new places with our dogs as an advanced group training class. We will learn and practice skills like walking nicely on a leash, coming when called, proper greeting of new people and dogs -- all in an unfamiliar place! Your dog will learn to listen and respond to your commands, while in the midst of a whole new environment offering unlimited distractions. If you took our Basic Companion Class think of this as Advanced Basic Companion--out of the Classroom and into the World!

Hearts and Paws sees that this type of training coincides perfectly with the AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Program. The AKC CGC Program is designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. Our Paw Trek Class gets us out of the classroom and into the community for training and practice of the behavior skills the CGC Program is based upon.

What is Canine Good Citizen (CGC)?

You and your dog will learn advanced greeting skills, longer sits and downs, even better loose-leash walking, and a whole lot more.
However, there is nothing formal about this class ... everything is taught in a relaxed environment using lots of fun and games.
The AKC Canine Good Citizen test is given during one Paw Trek each month.

About the Canine Good Citizen Program
The AKC CGC Program is designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. It is a two-part program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs. The Canine Good Citizen Program lays the foundation for other activities such as therapy dog certification, obedience, and performance events.
